The Night of San Juan in Calpe. It has been celebrated in Calpe since 1991.<\/p>\n

It is the shortest night of the year coinciding with the summer solstice and numerous rituals rooted in ancestral customs are carried out.<\/p>\n

For this reason, during this night many people stay in our holiday flats<\/a>\u00a0where all those couples in love culminate their love with what is considered the shortest night of the year.<\/p>\n

A bit of History about the Fiesta de San Juan<\/p>\n

The shortest night of the year has been celebrated since the beginning of the human race.\u00a0 The origin of the festival of Midsummer’s Eve has very ancient roots. In the beginning, men governed their lives by the sun, and they realised that there was a moment when the star lost its power, and the days became shorter. For fear of being left in darkness, they began to perform rituals and celebrations during the period when the sun shone brightly again, and this was the origin of the festivity of the Night of St. John. The arrival of the summer solstice was the arrival of the Sun, of life.<\/p>\n

It was the beginning of an exclusive season, which brought with it light and warmth; the cold winter and the dynamic spring were long gone. With the arrival of Christianity, Midsummer Night continued to be celebrated, but it lost its magical character and adopted a new concept. According to some writings, Zechariah had a bonfire lit to inform his relatives of the birth of his son, John the Baptist, who was asked to prepare the human race for the arrival of Jesus (but the Bible<\/a> does not actually state this story…). In the Middle Ages, Christians lit huge bonfires and celebrated rites around them. Midsummer’s Eve is the shortest night of the year.<\/p>\n

Superstitious people believe that it is the perfect night to scare away the bad spirits and attract the good ones. They say it is a feast full of magic with surprising rituals, full of symbolism. Tradition assumes the presence of water and fire, on the night of San Juan, which will protect whoever jumps over them; in the Mediterranean the rite involves jumping seven waves of the sea and another seven times over the bonfire.<\/p>\n
